Trigger Setup

Posted by Duane on October 23, 1999 at 19:51:56:
A few weeks ago C. Brown posted an inquiry regarding the relative proportions of pull weights typically dialed into fist and second stage. I have been awaiting the usual helpful responses to no avail. I will again post the question. How do the ten ring shooters typically adjust first/second stage pull weights? I seems that most would be taken up with the first stage with a very slight increase reserved for the second stage, but a lot of this beginner's assumptions have proven erroneous. Any experienced advice is welcomed.
Thanks,
Duane

This is entirely personal preference. I prefer to have a longish heavy first stage of about 400 grms and then the final 100 to let off which is extremely crisp. The advantage tho of the 2 stages it that you can play with it to get it how you like .

I normally set guns up for beginners at 250/250 until they devlop the fine motor skills to appreciate the smaller second stage. Its real easy in amtch to go right thru the second stage if its too close after you been through about 40 shots. . Its basically whaever you feel comfortbale with. Some top shooters prefer a single stage. But like Clive said, most shooters will normally go tthe 375/125 to 400/100 ratio as their skills develop/

I'd say an inexperienced shooter should not set up too light a second stage, as this promotes the "now!" syndrome.
Try to avoid the mindset that a lighter apparent trigger pull is better. However it's set up it must have a smooth release as the whole concept behind area aim is that the shot is fired unconsciously (in other words, if it's not a surprise when it goes off it probably isn't a good shot).
More experienced shooters can handle a lighter second stage, but this is mainly because they have such well developed "feel" and won't go straight through it and have an accidental discharge.
If a light trigger made shooting easy, Free Pistol would be a breeze. If anything it makes you extra trigger shy and more inclined to jerk the shots out of the aiming area.
