Improved Silent Pellet Trap

Posted by Joe Matusic, MD on November 15, 1999 at 13:06:33:
I have made an improved silent ballistic putty trap that I have for sale. I sold 12 in just over 3 hours at the Roanoke Airgun Show. I designed the trap to answer problems with the Beeman trap (too small, pellets can bounce out, mess from cardboard target backer, have to tape or pin the target up, can't take larger or laser printer printed target). Please see http://www.babymd.com/aa.htm. Also available: CDROM of 390 pictures and 35 minutes of video of the Roanoke Intrnational Airgun Show, Wood Pellet replicas for desk weights, paperclip holders, Perfume pens, Pen Toolkits.

Dr. Joe,
Since I started shooting basement 10M, I have been dreaming of a silent trap which will take a B40/4 (14" square) four bull target. If you start getting itchy for a new project around the shop ...

I was going to build such a large (4-bull)trap myself until I found out how much ballistic putty would be required to make it. The cost would be too high. I built a copy of the Beeman trap for my own use but the one the good Doctor is building is awesome. It would eliminate the mess from pellets and paper wads falling on the floor. Good job! Currently, I sit my trap on a cardboard flat box from a carton of Coke cans, but it still allows the little paper wads to fall to the floor. The only suggestion I have for the new pellet trap would be to put a piece of thin cardboard - the back of a writing pad - on the clipboard and then cut a circle out the same size as the 10M pistol black. That allows even cleaner holes to be cut.

An EXCELLANT alternative to ballistic putty is a type of putty used by electricians in house wiring called duct seal putty. I recently put over twelve pounds into a silent pellet trap, and it cost me just over $1.00 per pound! You can get it from electrical -- NOT electronic -- supply houses. Shop around to get the best price. It usually comes in 1# and 5# lumps. I also shoot a magnum airgun (over 1000 ft/sec), and the pellets only penetrate to about 1/2" from 15 yards.
