Muzzle Velocity in PCPs

Posted by Dean on February 13, 2000 at 05:21:43:
Anybody have ideas on range of muzzle velocities that compressed air pistols with compensators should be set at? My new LP201 Walther is putting them out at approx. 420 ft/sec ( a little slow i think???)
thanks

Most suppliers recommernd a muzzle velocuty of app. 150M (490 - 500 ft) /sec.
On theory, the higher the speed, the flatter the trajectory. However, with compress air as properlent, higher speed implies less shots for each fill and velocity changes may be also higher from full tank to near empty whcih results in unstable scores.
The jump may be more noticeable with higher velocity.
Lastly, each pistol may have several sweet spot for different loads (type of pellets in different calibre, weight) so finding the best combination is an interest, or tedious process.

Having played around with various pellets and different speeds, The FWB 34 seems happiest at around 550 fps, Morini's at 490-510, lP10 at 550 fps. All tested with H&N 4.49 Final Match High Speed.
I did a bench test recently with many guns and eventually when I finish all my tests I will publish an article in one of the papers...
