I've used .22 target pistols, such as High Standards, Hammerli 280, Pardini SP, and FAS 602, in NRA Conventional Pistol (Bullseye) events, and in NRA-sponsored Standard Pistol events. I'm still catching on to the International events, but they've been great! (Take the AimPoint off for UIT rules.)
I've also used a High Standard in .22 metalic silhouette competition. There are even .22 bowling pin events.
In short: Invest in a good quality .22, and opportunities to compete abound.

For ISSF sanctioned events, you can refer to the ISSF homepage at www.ISSF-Shooting.org.
However, though these events all use the cal. 22, the pisotl have different setups.

For the bullseye pistol events ...
NRA conventional pistol (one of three phases uses the 22 pistol)
ISU Standard pistol
ISU Rapid fire pistol (usually 22 short)
ISU Free pistol (single-shot pistols)
ISU Sport pistol (a woman-only event, as far as I know)
