Shooting Jacket

Posted by B.McLaughlin on March 07, 2000 at 19:04:58:
I am considering the purchase of a shooting jacket for 10m rifle.
Any opinions of the Anschutz Stenvaag Model 2?
Are custom jackets worth the extra money?
Any other suggestions? My wife is allowing me to spend $500 (she is paying for it).

I just replied to a clothing question below, and I thought I would send along a few thoughts your way too. One of my German shooting buddies has an AHG/Anschutz Stenvaag (I don't recall if it's a 1 or 2), and it has served him well for a number of years. He is a former German national champion, so I think that if the Stenvaag is good enough for him, it is good enough for most of the readers of this forum. One feature of the Stenvaag that I like is the use of a leather patch where the elbow sits on the hip, which is where the jacket sees a lot of wear.
As for custom -- I wish I had the money, but did you know that the fit of a jacket is adjustable to the individual wearer? The buttons are moveable, so you can adjust the size to a certain extent. Just keep in mind that there are rules concerning overlap, so the jacket must be close in size. As I mentioned in the other post, I think it would be better to buy a good jacket and pants, rather than spend a bucket full of money on a jacket alone.
As for other suggestions -- None, really. The jacket you have in mind is a very good one. As long as you are happy with the looks, then you should do just fine. If you haven't done so, you might check out the jackets from Gehmann, Thune, and Sauer. They won't be constructed any better, but one of them just might have a feature or pattern that you might like a little more.

I will input my 2 cents worth. The jacket you want is a very good one. However I suggest either buying a custom fit jacket from one of the manufacuers such as Kurt Thune, Saur,Kusterman or even Anshutz. The custom fit will take a while but the fit is so critical that the extra time and money is worth it. Having said that I would suggest this. Most of the manufactuers have a lower price line of cloths in off the rack sizes. I own an inexpensive Anshutz jacket that fits just fine off the rack. and as the other repliant said and Phil is right you can adjust some with the buttons. At the price of the low line models you can buy both pants and jacket with a glove maybe even boots for that same $500.00. I find the quality is good on my jacket. I have been using it for about 1 year very hard (2 to 4 times a week). and have had no problems. Look for the club line equipment from Champions Choice, Champions shooters Supply, Neil Johnson and Center Shot sports. They all have a liberal return policy. If the off the rack stuff does not fit they will return it without question. All are good companies and if the rack stuff does not work out. Then I suggest ordering custom fit.
