: I recently ordered some shooting glasses for air pistol shooting and was considering purchasing the iris option.
: Have you had any good, bad, indifferent experiences using an iris or do you know anyone else that has used one?
Hi Bob! An iris can be really useful for a well trained shooter, since you can adjust your focus perfectly for hindsight, frontsight and the target.
Beware though, since I've oserved that not-so-well trained shooters have a tendency to look at the target and ignore the frontsight when using an iris.
So be especially aware of your follow-through to avoid that fatal mistake!

Bob, personally the adjustable iris is manditory for me. It is the way a person adjusts the glassed for different light conditions. If your were going to be shooting under the perfect light all the time it might not be necessary, but who gets to do that? The range we shoot on has a huge glass wall that lets in a lot of light. If it is a cloudy day, the light changes from minute to minute. The iris lets you easily and quickly adjust for that.

The iris is useful for controlling depth of field. Don't get too much, though. If you can see the front sight and the target, there is a tendency to look at the target. Don Nygord has a good explanation of how to use the iris on his site.
