Match Air Pistols

Posted by David Bruce on July 31, 2000 at 09:36:52:
I have been thinking about getting a match pistol. I don't compete. I just want one for plinking/targets. I have been thinking about the Steyr LP10 or the LP5. Could some of you answer some questions for me?
Is the velocity adjustable on these? What is the velocity? Is the LP10 more accurate than the LP5? Does the clip on the LP5 stick out (sideways or up)?
To answer your questions, Why do I need this kind of gun if I don't compete? I just like to have the best. I might do some local competition If there is any. Do any of you know of any competition or clubs in the Portland Oregon area?

Although I'm far from being an expert on Steyrs, I have owned and shot the LP5, LP1C and LP1 but not the LP10 (not yet, anyway), and all are outstanding match pistols.
The LP5 mag feeds sideways (right to left), velocity is adjustable, and the LP10, LP1C and LP1 have a slight accuracy over the LP5, at least that's my experience from looking at test groups supplied with the pistols.
Which one to get? Well, the most fun to shoot is the LP5, due to the mag, but, for match accuracy, I'd go for the LP10. No matter which Steyr you do decide on, buy from Scott at Pilkguns, he supports the shooting sports and is always there at the big matches helping out and is as fair a guy as you're going to get.

Agreed, but understand that the LP5 will make one-hole groups, albeit a bit larger hole than the LP1, LP10 class guns. I have both an LP5 and an LP1 & would probably recommend the LP5 for the purposes you describe. Look at CO2 guns, they are cheaper and imho you lose little or nothing in accuracy and convenience vs a PCP version.
As far as adjustable velocity, I have both my guns set in the 550-600 fps range (haven't chronoed them lately). At this speed, a pellet will bury itself up to its tail in a pine board.

I played with the velocity on my LP10 last weekend. I was using RWS R10 heavy ammo. I stopped turning it down at 350 fps and maxed it out at 595. Recoil was virtually absent at all velocities, by the way.

I agree completely, but keep in mind: CO2 is on retreat. For example in Germany nearly all new pistols and rifles are sold with copressed air (scuba). I don't know the ameican market, but for Germany the CO2 wouldn't be a good tip, because if you wan't to be up to date in the future, you would have to buy a conversion-set(costs in Germany roundabout 360,--DM).
