At todays PTO match in (sort of close to) Los Angeles we had the honor of shooting with US Olympian and free pistol world record (with finals) holder Bill Demarest. Bill had an off day so he only beat the second place guy (yours truly, who now doesn't care about individual scores, only placement :-) by an average of one ring per shot! :-)
Bill practices at a public range where he experiences the same problems that I related in my story - but like six times a week, 120 shots per session! (That plus more puts you in contention for national championships plus getting to rep the U.S.)
When the range is down he measures out 33 feet. Tapes a cardboard "tent" at that measurement to the floor. He then hangs a string with a weight of a few washers off the bottom of his target. He can now send his target down stream until the string/washers come to a rest at the "tent" marker. He now is at the proper distance and the string and weight resting against the stop stabilize his target. He still gets some target wiggle from the neighboring target carriers moving.
Perhaps that is Bills secret! Imagine his superb timing after years of trying to hit that moving ten! Imagine how easy it must be to hit tens when they aren't moving!!!
Do we have a new training technique here?!
Next, an article on how to introduce movement to your ordinary stationary target holder ...
