Stance - Foot Placement

Posted by douglas on August 30, 2000 at 13:58:42:
About 2 years ago, I was at a training camp offered by a member of the Canadian shooting Team and he indicated that comtemporary thought on the team was that your feet ought to be shoulder width apart but with the toes slightly turned in (not pointing slightly outwards as I had been taught). He said that you need not be pigeon toed, but that you may obtain better stability if your toes were slightly turned in. Has anyone come across this idea, and do you have any thoughts?

I've never come across that idea (my coach follows a very traditional line of thought), but hey, whatever works is good, I guess. Personally I don't see myself getting more stable from pointing my toes inward. It would probably add stress on my ankles and calves and compromise overall stability. But, if it works for you, you should do it!

This may seem a stupid question but are you talking about rifle or pistol?

I have only heard about this for pistol-shooting. But I do not know much about rifle, so maybe the same principle can be use there.

This idea is well known in Europe. I think I first heard about it in a video with the German World Champion Potteck.
My understanding was that the toes should not neccessarily point inward, but the idea was to move the toes slightly inward compared to a relaxed stance. This would create some (not much!) tension in the muscles of the legs, and some people felt that this would give a more stable stance.
I have tried it, and I did not like it. But then I did not give myself much time to get used to it. So maybe it is like with all new ideas: One has to give it some time (weeks/months) to be be sure if it has any effect or not.
