How tight should my coat and pants be?

Posted by matt on February 05, 2001 at 15:34:09:
Hi all,
I was just wondering how tight my coat and pants should be for ISSF shooting? I have been using new pants and coat for about 4 months and it never dawned on me that they might not fit right, or they might be illegal or something.
Thanks,
matt

See the ISSF website for all rules. Essentially there aren't any major rules for trousers that your pants should not meet if they were made correctly. They do have a requirement that you be able to put them on with the legs zipped wearing normal shoes and that you be able to bend your legs normally so feet touch the floor while seated (and legs zipped). Maybe they check that at int'l matches, but I haven't seen them do either one of those at a national match before. IMHO, they should on some people. I've seen some pretty tight legs before.
For jackets, you must be able to pull the jacket closed an additional 7 cm past the button. It will make more sense once you read the actual rule and they have a small diagram as well. This is how they govern "looseness".

One thing to watch for is the no more than 50mm above crest of the hip rule. 50mm is not that much and if the legs on the pants are slightly long, they can easily push the whole pants up and you might exceed the limit. This is expensive to fix.

Strange... Just look at the 2001 rule book. The part about running shoes seems to be gone and there doesn't seem to be mention of sitting *and* touching the floor either. I don't get it...

Well what do you know, I guess I should read ALL of the new rules. 8o) They obviously made more changes than that little "addendum" they released in October.
I always thought that was a stupid rule, but I do think they should have some way of regulating the looseness of the legs as they do the jackets.

Unfortunately, the other gentleman's answer only discussed the "legal" part of your question.
The other part is that you MAY NOT want them as tight as legally possible. To have the coat/pants control your position & balance, instead of providing muscular support (and insulation) may be disastrous. For example, if the coat is so tight that it inhibits natural back bend, so that you are off balance, the coat obviously adds no benefit. Same with the pants- while they may provide good support in standing, it's possible that they may inhibit a comfortable kneeling position.
So, yes, follow ISSF rules, but don't believe that you have to go to that extreme.
