A Question for Morini CM84E Free Pistol Shooters....

Posted by carl on January 30, 2002 at 10:32:54:
Hey Guys,
I’ve been shooting Morini's free pistol since last spring. Wonderful gun. Anyhow, last couple of weeks I started getting some shots I didn’t call. I thought it was just me having a slump. Then the battery failed. It must have been on the shelf for a while because I didn’t get the 5000 rounds as advertised. No problem. So I replaced the battery and now the problem with the wild shots has disappeared! Could it be when the battery is low the sear slows down? Have a similar experience? Or was it just me having a bad day?
Also, I was wondering how often you clean the bore of your free pistol? I’ve heard everything from after every match to almost never. The manual says to only have a qualified service provider disassemble the gun. Does that mean that once a year its best to send it to Warren for a cleaning and check up?
Also, what ammo have you found to give the best groups at 50 meters? Thanks, Carl

All eight finalists at last years Free Pistol Nationals used Eley Tenex (one used the newer EPS). But as Don Nygord says in his message that goes out with each Toz he sells, there are very few people in the world that can take advantage of the slightly better accuracy using the most expensive match ammo. You should order a variety of different mid level ammo's (box of 50) to try out with your pistol ... find which groups best off of a sand bag ... and then buy a case of that lot numbered ammo. At the moment I'm using Wolf (same as German SK ammo) Match Extra ($240/case/5000 rounds) ... because it grouped very nicely. But I'm sure I would have been served just as well by using the less expensive Wolf Match Target ($160/case) which grouped only slightly worse. btw. Pilkguns, our message board sponsor sells SK .22 ammo.
World Record holder, match plus finals, Bill Demarest use to train using Federal 711B ... a pretty inexpensive round. But to show you how relatively unimportant the ammo is ... Bill shot his record in Milan, Italy using some free Fiocchi ammo that was given to him. After setting the record they tested the loaner Toz that he shot with ... and the Fiocchi ammo that he used tested the worst of all the ammo they tested! It might have actually cost him a point or two ... but we're talking World Record holder here .... :-)

Did you do a battery test before shooting, the LED should recharge almost a soon as the trigger is pulled (at least a discharge once a second). The Free pistol has a higher demand on the battery than the Air pistol because of the saftey circuit. A battery that fails the Free check will be good for 3-5 tins of pellets in the Air pistol. I have a compensator on my Free pistol, so I clean it and the barrel every 2-3 matches and before every big match. Cleaning will also vary with the ammo you use.
At the Olympics I used RWS ammo and I train with Federal. I set a new state record of 572 with Federal 711 earlier this month.
Price is no indication of performance, go and test the ammo in a machine rest.

Where do you still find 711? My sports pistol loves 711 but it's not available anymore ... over here at least. (It hates 711B?!)

'Hey Carl,
Im sure a weak battery has nothing to with your strange shots. Just dismount the part where the frontsight is mounted and clean it inside. Particles of lead can get stuck inside and after a while they can cause a kind of turbulence that can cause your problem. A good Lapuha ammunition is always a good choice ,for competition in any case..
