I need some general
information on the value of shooting glasses in 10m pistol shooting. Could
anyone please give me a brief explanation of their purpose....or direct me to a
site where I could get this information? Thanks very much, too, for the many
responses I got last week concerning my questions about Pardini pistols. I hope
to get to the point before too long that I can answer some questions
intelligently myself!!

Don Nygord has a
good article in his Nygord's Notes section of his site. Precision Sports, at
http://home.ipoline.com/~precspt/articles.htm also has some good information.

I bought a pair of
the good ones and couldn't be happier. I got the lens that puts the front sight
in focus and the target a little fuzzy and the blinders for the off eye. It
helps mostly with taking your concentration off focusing on the front sight
because it is almost automatic and lets you concentrate on the other aspects of
your shot.

I think you should keep
things as simple as you can. Choose a good adjustable frame; choose it well
because a good pair of gasses lasts a lifetime. Put a blinder in it, I use a
very small white one as it gives you a better view of the surroundings helping
you to keep balance.
About the lens to focus the front sight I don’t agree
with it, because if you care to read about it, the eyes in their relaxed state
focus an object about a meter in front of them, this being the distance of the
front sight.
In the other hand think how much time you actually stare at the
front sight and how much do you spend focusing on other things, thus forcing
your eyes. Do you see any shooting champion using this lens?
A frame is a
good idea as it helps you to keep your head always in the same position, and if
you like you can put a neutral high quality anti glare lens on it with a UV
coating.
And after you settle things as you like stick to them and train as
hard as you can. Shooting is consistency and regularity.

Precision Sports has a lot
of good information under Champion glasses. Although it is for the Champion
glasses it would apply to the Knoblock or Varga as well. Also read the articles
on Don Nygord's sight (see thread below.)
First you should never shoot with
out some sort of glasses to protect your eyes. For those of us who are just a
little bit past our prime (read old farts who need bifocals) having glasses that
help us focus on the front sight is essential. I could not shoot if I didn't
have glasses that would allow me to focus there. If you are young and don't have
any problems you can get buy with Ray Ban type shooting glasses. Now for why the
Champion type of glasses. This type of glasses adjusts so the eye looks through
the center of the lens and the lens is perpendicular to the line of sight. An
iris can be used with the glasses which can be adjusted to give the shooter a
frame which makes it easier to keep the head in place in relation to the gun, or
to step it down to reduce the depth of field to reduce the fuzziness of the
target. (this is a whole other thread) Also you can have additional clip on
lenses which can be used in different light conditions. I use a .75 inside with
air pistol and a .50 outside with the free pistol and sometimes change around
for different conditions. You can also have different colored lenses again for
different light conditions.
Are expensive shooting glasses necessary? No. On
the other hand all the pictures of international competitions all the shooters
are using them. I need them. When I was 30 they would have been nice, maybe
another point in a 600 match.
