Steyr Free Pistol Questions

Posted by Gilberto Castaneda on March 26, 2001 at 11:27:17:
Hi there:
I am in the process of changing from a MU 55 to a Steyr free pistol, but I have found the following things: I can not set the trigger as low as I like, With the MU 55 I have it at 13 gr, but the Steyr can not be set lower than 20 gr without risk of unwanted shots when closing the action, what worries me the most is that there is not a dry fire mechanism, other than leaving the action open, so the firing pin does not strike the empty shell or chamber protector. Any comments on this.
Also, I have not been able to get high scores with this gun, nor with the MU 55, for that matter, as I used to get with a Hämmerli 152, I once got 540 with it, but, since then, when I wanted to change grips all the wiring went with the old grips, and the module also burned. That forced me to change.
Good shooting to all of you.
Gilberto

Perhaps the problems you mention are why the Steyr Free Pistol has never become popular even with it's innovative design ideas. A match pistol with no dry fire capabilities...

I have a Steyr FP that I bought used and can offer some comments. First, there is no way to dry fire it, except by using an empty case. Second, the trigger weight on my pistol SEEMS NOT TO BE ADJUSTABLE AT ALL, although in theory of course it is (the thing doesn't respond to my turning the adjustment screw). Why do I keep this pistol you ask. Otherwise it's pretty nice. The trigger weight is about where I want it anyway, and the rest of the adjustments are easy. The laminated grips are very good, and the general level of workmanship is high. Would I buy one at the new price? Nope. But I enjoy shooting it and don't do so badly with it, though if I were a serious competitor (which I'm not) I'd stick with my TOZ.

I have a MU55 and am very happy with it. I didn’t like the original grip, so I built another. Now my score improved. My advice: stay with the MU55. If you don’t like the original grip try to build one, or if you don’t feel like it try this address, as the make grips for your pistol.
Good luck

: Hi there:
: I am in the process of changing from a MU 55 to a Steyr free pistol, but I have found the following things: : I can not set the trigger as low as I like, With the MU 55 I have it at 13 gr, but the Steyr can not be set lower than 20 gr without risk of unwanted shots when closing the action, Steyr makes a different spring that lets you go lower than 20 grams, but it is not standard in the gun because the trend in Free pistol weight has been away from the real low (10-20g)weights and more towards the 35-50 g areas :: what worries me the most is that there is not a dry fire mechanism, other than leaving the action open, I would not leave the action open, as now your dry fire feel will not feel the same since the weight is hanging different. You only need to put an empty piece of brass in there and dryfire on the brass so the firing pin does not strike the empty shell or chamber protector.
: Any comments on this.
