LP5P and Red Dot Mounting

Posted by Mike Fletcher on July 16, 2001 at 16:49:32:
How can I mount a dot sight on my LP5P? Thanks, Mike

Have a machinist use a ball end mill to cut one transverse slot in the barrel shroud. Make sure it is deep enough to clear the screw in a Weaver mounting ring. Color the slot black with the aluminum "bluing" goo from Birchwood-Casey.
Mount the dot with a single ring.
I think a 1/8" slot is enough. Check your mount. The shroud is not exactly the Weaver profile but it is easily close enough for stable mounting.
The bottom of the ring may need some straight-across milling as well to allow the higher "hump" of the shround to clear. Not fancy or high precision but take the ring when you go to visit your friendly neighborhood machinist. Or just buy both a machined shroud and ring from Scott & Warren.
Advice originally from Scott, worked fine for me.

Hi Mike
We can either sell you a spare shroud that has been cut to suit a modified Weaver ring with red dot attached already OR give you further advice on how to cut and attach your own dot and ring. George's advice was excellent, by the way.

Warren, Scott, what is cost of shroud, ring and machining with customer dot scope? Thanks

Posted by Warren on July 17, 2001 at 10:56:39:
Total cost of everything would be $230 for 1 inch or $235 for 30mm. It's the Adco Vantage (i.e. Japanese made) red dot rather than a Chinese unit.
Just the machined shroud and modified ring, either 1 inch or 30mm, would be $130.

Having done this, let me offer a different approach.
Take a 93B Weaver mount base, use the back front sight screw hole, add one threaded hole in the shroud to match the length between holes in the Weaver base, use 3mm screws to attach, and your done.
I mounted a rifle scope for silhouette matches about a year ago using Leupold quick detachable rings (a lever to tighten the rings to base). I shoot open sights, pop on the scope and shoot scope. On and off several times each match. The difference in impact point with scope on-off-on is virtually zero. I shoot 37-40x40 most matches, 32-35 open sights.
I recently added a red-dot in 30mm quick detachable rings. Same zero shift in removing and reattaching the dot. Just use the smallest dot you can find.
I'll e-mail you some photos.
Good luck.

If you really want a light weight red dot try the Tasco Optima 2000. Total weight is about 1.5 oz. It comes with a weaver style base, ready to clamp on. The windage and elevation adjustments are somewhat crude and not very repeatable, but once you get it set, it stays put. Mid-South Shooters supply is selling these for about $120 now. Dot sizes are 3 & 7 moa. I've got a couple on centerfire pistols and have used it on my Pardini K2 with double sided carpet tape, just to see how it would work. Neat little piece of technology and if Tasco ever refines the W&E for repeatable click adjustments, I'd use it for bullseye as well.
