Hammerli SP20

I used to shoot a SW 41 and always wanted a Hammerli 280. Now I can afford one they are now out of production. Has anyone got any comments on the SP20?

They (SP20's) are very well-made, and quite accurate. One of my league buddies shoots one, and swears by it.
Having said that, I'd look for a used 280, if a Hammerli is what you want. They were seen in some numbers, and should be available. I have one, and sometimes shoot it. "Sometimes" because I find I shoot a Pardini somewhat better, NOT because there is anything wrong with the 280. My best targets with it are every bit as good as any other gun I own. I'm simply more likely to shoot my best with the Pardini.
Cheers!

: I agree with you the Hammerli 280 is fantastic gun. In my club we have one, and it is really a pleasure to shoot with it but I think you need to add some weights otherwise it jumps a bit.
I have heard a lot of good feedbacks about the SP20. I had the possibility to try the new one some weeks ago but I really didn't like it.
I had a feeling to shoot with a plastic pistol, the absorber system is not that efficient that it seems to be, I was disappointed to see my shooting group, and to finish I had a misfire, which never happened when I was using a GSP of my shooting club.
So I went for a new (old model) GSP.
What I'd suggest to you is to get an SP20 and try it your self, only you can say if the gun is good for you or not. BTW, I think I have seen new Hammerlis 280 at Frankonia for 2500 Dm.

The SP20 is just an overprice gun made of cheap materials, your model 41 is in my opinion 3 times better. I personally will purchase a used 208s instead or a AW93 brand new.
Good luck.Gary

Try both Hammerli USA (hammerliusa.com) and Larry's Guns (larrysguns.com). I'd bet that the former still has one or two Hammerli 280s in stock. That being said, the SP-20 reportedly is pretty good. I personally like the 280 more due to the variable weight/CG setup. It was the 280s biggest strength.

I have purchased SP20 shortly after introduction of this gun to the market, so I have pretty long experience with it. It is a reliable beauty. Weight distribution fits me perfectly. I have ordered a wooden grip (looks better then HighGrip - only a matter of taste). Precision is excellent, far beyond my abilities. In training 296/300, in competition 293/300 in SP 3+30 national Czech disciplines. Due to the mentioned good distribution of the weight very good for 30+30 (duel) competition as well. Adjustable is in all really necessary aspects, including the buffer. I can only advise regular cleaning and light oiling of magazine (according to manual every cca 600 shots), but with certain ammunition (Lapua or Eley) no cleaning necessary to prevent feeding problems.
Good luck and tens!

Jim,
I bought an SP20 last May. I had heard a lot of things about it but very little from anyone who had actually shot one. I used mine in 6 bullseye matches last summer plus practice and a weekly league. I only have fired two or three refire strings. Only one at an actual match. This is as good as anything else that I have seen. It is reliable. Although I have not done any rigorous tests I have no complaints about its accuracy.
