Dishwasher Cleaner Do-It-Yourself Guide

The black freestanding dishwashers is one of the most important kitchen aids, it facilitates the daily routine in the kitchen time-saving and thorough. Immaculately shining glasses and dishes result from the addition of dishwasher cleaner. If you look at the ingredients, it reveals a real chemical cudgel: genetically produced enzymes are supposed to dissolve deposits and a whole series of questionable ingredients are based on petroleum products.

If you are looking for environmentally friendly alternatives, you can turn to eco-cleaners, which are also quite expensive. Many people are rather dissatisfied with the dishwashing results and ask themselves: can effective cleaners be produced inexpensively themselves? The answer is "yes" and we would like to tell you right away how.

What does a dish cleaner need to be able to do?

Only a few substances are needed to clean dishes impeccably. Ready-made products are critical because they contain allergenic fragrances and corrosive chemicals that pose an acute danger to small children if swallowed. The current test at Stiftung Warentest from 08.03.2018 showed that the cleaning effect varies greatly.

Some products even caused glass corrosion, colorful iridescent stainless steel and irretrievably discolored silver cutlery. Apart from that, individually packaged tabs produce a lot of plastic waste. A dishwasher should perform only three basic tasks:

1. the lime content in the tap water must be neutralized

2. the water must be softened by supporting an ion exchanger

3. the dishes must be cleaned of grease and food residues without leaving any residues

Make your own dishwasher cleaner

One kilo of cleaner is enough for about 40 dishwashing cycles. You need 1 - 2 teaspoons of the powder per load. You can get all the ingredients in drugstores or online.

A recipe for 1000 g of DIY dishwasher cleaner:

  • 300 g pure soda
  • 300 g baking soda
  • 300 g citric acid
  • 125 g special salt for the dishwasher

Dishwasher cleaners have to deal with different types of dirt: When food is prepared, starch, protein and fat remain on the cookware. The ingredients have their own tasks: Citric acid, also known as additive E330, softens the water and acts against lime deposits. Soda and baking soda dissolve greasy residues, and the salt removes deposits and softens the water.
