Downhill skiing

One of the major sports at the Winter Olympics is downhill skiing which involves skiing down a steep snow-covered slope. Alpine skiing was introduced at the 1936 Olympics and has been a regular feature at all Winter Olympics except the 1940 Olympics. Austria has won more alpine skiing competitions than any other country: athletes from the country collected a total of 114 medals, 34 of which were gold.

Biathlon

Another popular Olympic winter event is the biathlon. Biathlon is one of the most challenging sports at the Olympics as it combines rifle shooting and cross-country skiing. Competitors start the biathlon with a cross-country race involving at least two coils. The entire ski area ranges from 12 miles to 3.7 miles and the shooting range is 150 feet. Biathlon was officially introduced to the Olympics during the 1960 Games.

Bobsleigh

Bobsleigh is a popular winter sport invented by the Swiss in the late 19th century when the first sleds were built in St Petersburg. Moritz, Switzerland. The sport involves teams competing by racing around a winding circle of ice on a high-tech sled driven by gravity. Bobsleigh has been a popular event at the Winter Olympics and has been at every Winter Olympics since 1964 with two, two and four runners.

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing is the original form of skiing and disappears from alpine skiing, which requires skiers to rely solely on their skis for terrain, rather than using lifts. Cross-country skiing is one of the most important events at the Winter Olympics, as well as one of the oldest events at the Games. Men's cross-country skiing was first introduced at the Winter Olympics during the inaugural Winter Olympics in 1924. The country with the most Olympic victories in cross-country skiing is Norway, with 40 gold medals.

Figure skating

Figure skating is a popular winter sport in which competitors perform individually, in duo or in groups using skates. Figure skating was so popular that it was the first winter sport to be introduced at the Summer Olympics. The sport was one of the first events at the first Olympic Games in 1924 and has been a regular feature at all the Olympic Games since then.

Hockey

Hockey is played in an ice rink. Hockey was originally an event during the 1920 Summer Olympics but was later moved to the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The sport is governed by rules set by the International Ice Hockey Federation, and Olympic events are regulated by anti-doping rules. Canada is the most successful country in this event, winning a total of 20 medals, 13 of which were gold.

Speed skating

Another winter sport included in the events selected for the Winter Olympics is speed skating. Speed skating is one of the first competitive sports, and the sport was introduced during the first Winter Olympics in 1924. However, women's events were officially added to the 1960 Winter Olympics. The Netherlands won the most Olympic medals in speed skating with 105 medals.

Ski Jumping

The Winter Olympics have another exciting sport, known as ski jumping. Ski jumping involves descending a steep slope and then jumping down an elevated hill known as a hill. There are four sailing events in each edition of the Olympics, three of which are competed by men and one by women.

Luge

Luge is a winter sport in which competitors take tobogganing on a special ice track that relies on the power of gravity to increase and maintain speed. The winners are the competitors who complete the course in the shortest time. The sled is interesting because the riders lie down and get on the sled first. There have been cases of hatching at the Winter Olympics, as the sport was first introduced at the 1964 Winter Olympics.
