FUN PRACTICE

  • Shoot paper flies, stockings, turkeys etc.
  • Shoot out the flame of candle
  • Shoot initials
  • Blind Shoot–
    • Zero Rifle
    • NPA each shot
    • Close eyes, wait 4 sec. shoot
  • Guts Match (Survivor)
    • Zero (3 min)
    • 1 shot at a time by command
    • call out shot value
    • Low man out
    • After you are out you may try to distract the other shooters – no touching
  • 5 Card Poker
    • 1 card for each bulls eye
    • best 5 card hand at end of practice wins
    • must have at least 5 cards to play
  • Card shoot
    • Cards lengthwise to shooter
  • 3P Bulls eye Challenge
    • Start in Prone Position – Shoot three shots in each record bull until you have at least one bulls eye and two more shots touching.
    • When verified by coach shooter may go on to standing. Repeat above.
    • First one done with all three positions wins.
  • 3 To Go
    • Start in prone.
    • Must shoot within 3 points of personal best to move on to next position.
  • Steaks
    • Cut cardboard 1” x 9” attach a piece of red fabric to top
    • Shooter must shoot thru steak and have flag fall over to win
  • Three in Four (or two in four for less skilled shooters)
    • Set up two targets, zero
    • Use only the rows of four record bulls (two outside rows of each target)
    • The first shooter to have 3 out of the four tens wins
    • You must finish the row before going on to the next
  • Counting Tens
    • Keep track of the number of tens shot
    • If you shoot 60 shots standing your score would be 45/60 tens
    • No actual score – keep focused on tens not score
  • First to five
    • Round 1 everyone shoots – call out tens when you get one
    • First three with five tens goes on to round two – remaining team
      • Members try to distract finalists
    • First with additional five tens (or three) wins
  • Five to win
    • Pair up shooters according to skill level
    • Each shoots one shot – higher score gets one point
    • First one to five points wins
  • Three minutes for score
    • (Usually shot before first to five)
    • Fire 10 record shots in 3 minutes
  • Quick finals
    • Allow 20, 15 or 10 sec for each shot
  • Lift and shoot
    • Shooter has ten sec to deliver a quality shot or rifle is put down
    • If the shot is a 9 or ten they get 5 points if the shooter does not make the Shot in 10 sec they lose 5 points
    • no points for shots less than 9
    • Time should be reduced from 10 to 9 to 8
  • Dryfire – shoot
    • Do ten dryfire shots – ten record shots
  • NRA Disruption
    • Draw cards with jumbled numbers 1-10.
    • Must shoot in order of card
  • Team Competition
    • Divide into teams and shoot 60 shot match
  • Squash – two equally matched shooters.
    • First shooter takes shot (he shoots a 8)
    • Second shooter must shoot an 8 or better.
    • If he does not the first shooter gets a point and continues with his next shot.
    • If he does shoot 8 or better no point is given and the turn goes to second shooter.
  • Runathon
    • Shooter have targets and rifle set up on line.
    • Shooters run around the building comes in pick up rifle, load and shoot 1 shot, go out, run around the building, come in a shoot 1 shot, repeat one more time for a total of three times.
    • Take the total time plus 10 second penalty for each miss.
    • Lowest time wins.
    • We usually do this with only 2 – 3 shooters at a time with parent timers.
  • Fox and Hound
    • Have one of the younger or less experience shooters take 1 head start shot (he’s the fox).
    • Do shots on command and add the shot together for each shooter including the fox.
    • The first shooter that catches the foxes score wins.
  • P. R. Competition (Personal Record Competition)
    • Good team competition.
    • Line kids up from best to worst shooter – 1st place goes to best shooter.
    • If shooter sets a personal record he/she get to trade places with the shooter in the next best position.
    • Example – if shooter in 3rd place sets a personal record he/she will trade place with shooter in 2nd place.
    • If the shooter in 2nd place also sets a personal record he/she blocks the advance of shooter in 3rd place.
    • Your younger (less experienced) shooters will climb the positions fairly quickly – the more experienced shooters will have to work hard to maintain their positions.
  • Up and Down
    • good for reinforcing a new position
    • Get into what ever position you are working on.
    • Shooter takes one shot.
    • Gets out of position, gets back into position, takes one shot – repeat.
  • Count on doing it Right
    • good for reinforcing an individual item lesson.
    • Pick an item a shooter is having trouble with or inconsistent with – ie visualization, cheek position, elbow consistant in same place on hip etc.
    • Using some type of counting system – pellet or bras in pocket, clicker counter pencil & paper.
    • After each shot if they did the item “Right” they put a pellet or brass in their pocket.
    • Figure how many shot they did “Right” out of the number shots they took.
  • Two Shot Finals
    • good for learning length of 75 sec shot window
    • In the 75 seconds allotted for a final shot the shooter must make two well-aimed shots.
    • Do two sets of finals.
  • Time Call Finals
    • Working thru distraction in a final
    • Coach will announce finals normally - when he says start he will give how many seconds the shooters have to make the shot.
    • He will ditract the shooters by calling out the seconds or their name w/ the seconds left.
    • Very the time for each shot.
    • Run a normal finals after to get them back on track.
  • Hold and Shoot Finals
    • good for learning length of 75 sec shot window
    • Shooter will have 75 seconds to bring rifle up, make a good honest steady hold, put the rifle down load and shoot the shot.
  • Mental Routine Drill
    • LEAD with you MIND so that your body follows with the desired results.
    • The shooter SPECIFICALLY tells himself/herself what to look for or do prior to the physical act of firing the shot
    • Step 1: mount the rifle, check balance
    • Step 2: Take deep breatha dn let it out
    • Step 3: VIVIDLY picture your hold and shooting your best ten.
    • Step 4: Settle onto the target, look thru sights, react to the sight picture, make the shot
  • Bullseye to go – (9, 8, or 7 for less skilled shooters)
    • Sight in.
    • On first record bull, shooter must keep shooting until he/she shoots a 10 before going on to next record bull.
    • Emphasis on good shots not score.
